Identification of Pertinent Acoustic Properties

Once rock and fluid types are identified, the reservoir database can be scoped for relationships between petrophysical and acoustic properties. The details of identifying petrophysically pertinent acoustic properties will vary from prospect to prospect, depending on both the local rock mass properties and the completeness of a database. Approaches include:

  • Conventional seismic modeling,
  • Cross-plotting well-log-scale acoustic properties versus petrophysical properties,
  • Overlaying capillary pressure and acoustic properties,
  • Overlaying Lorenz/Modified Lorenz plots and acoustic information,
  • Overlaying porosity-permeability and acoustic properties,
  • Backus averaging acoustic well-log measurements to upscale to the seismic scale.
